The shutter release button is blocked, you cannot take a picture. There may be several reasons, e.g. the subject is not illuminated enough; you are trying to focus on an object at a distance smaller than the MINIMUM FOCUSING DISTANCE for the lens etc. Without constantly looking at the EE of your camera it will not work - other people's knowledge and experience will not replace your own.

Try using a fast lens.

the camera has autofocus backlight, but if the subject is far away then its light lacks to the subject, and if the subject is very poorly lit then the camera can not focus. there are two ways out of the situation that I have used: 1. use manual focusing 2. focus on a subject that is better lit and keeping the shutter button half pressed direct the camera to the subject. Well, there will be some difference in distance, it's not significant, especially at night.
