VOB is a container to store MPEG 2 PS for viewing on DVD turntables. In principle disk is stupid storage medium and it does not care what to store, but if you write in MPEG 2 the file size should not be more than 0.99 hectares. Creating video disk structure with VOB you can get better quality there too. Then you don't have to compress an hour-long movie into 1 gig, but you can stretch it to 4 3 gigs.
