These chemical current sources based on an alkaline electrolyte may contain, depending on their design, valuable Ag or highly hazardous Hg,Cd components. Therefore, they are subject to mandatory recycling. Unfortunately I haven't personally seen a recycling point for such recycled raw materials anywhere. Alkaline batteries are rumored to be good for recharging, but I have not tried, and the manufacturers write that you can not.
