The KV-2 tank and the JSU-152 tank were the two tanks with the heaviest caliber guns-152 mm. The heavy caliber gun and thickness of the armor of the KV-2 meant that the turret could only be rotated horizontally.

The IS-2 tank was a heavy tank with a classic hull design. The front part was occupied by the control compartment with the driver's seat in the center. The center part of the hull was occupied by the fighting compartment above which the turret was installed, and the rear part of the hull was occupied by the engine compartment where the engine and transmission were installed. The turret was also welded, part of its elements were cast and part were made of rolled plates. The tank was powered by a 12-cylinder liquid cooled diesel engine developing 500 hp at 2000 rpm. The transmission was carried by a dry multi-disc clutch which gave the drawbar to a mechanical gearbox with a reducer which gave eight forward and two reverse speeds. The power from the gearbox was transmitted to two-stage planetary turning mechanisms and then to the drive wheels. The inner fuel tanks capacity was 520 liters. In addition there were additional outer tanks with a capacity of 300 liters, which together provided a cruising range of 240 km on a highway or 170 km in the field The tank chassis consisted of six pairs of double steel-cast carrying wheels with independent suspension. The drive wheels were located at the rear of the vehicle and the trailing wheels were on the front. The track width was 650 mm and consisted of 162 mm track spacing. The armament of the tank was a 122mm D-25T gun of 1943 model, with a firing angle of 360 degrees azimuth and -3 to +20 degrees elevation. The turret drive was both electric and manual. The auxiliary armament was represented by three 7.62mm DT machine guns, one of which was a directional machine gun mated to the gun and mounted in the turret, and one more mounted in the rear of the turret and operated by the tank commander. There was also an anti-aircraft 12.7 mm heavy machine gun mounted on the roof of the turret on the commander's seat. The gun had 28 rounds of separate loading ammunition, which considerably reduced the rate of fire of the gun due to its manual loading.

Historians are still puzzling over this and haven't come up with an unequivocal answer

The Tiger had a mass of 55 tons. The Royal Tiger had a weight of 68 tons. Armor plates tilt. Armed with a fairly effective cannon -88mm. IS-2 with mass of 46 tons had 122mm cannon. So, with comparable armor, the armament of IS-2 was more powerful, and he himself more agile. And then there was the IS-3. Its mass was 46.5 tons. The frontal armor was strengthened. The frontal armor was made with an angle in the plane.
