The reason for this is very simple - someone did it once. Just without thinking about ergonomics. Everyone got used to it. And why break tradition? That's why keyboards are made so awkward - because of tradition. In the old typewriters, they had to make this layout to slow down the typing speed, or else the typewriters would get jammed. People got used to it. And now, despite the absence of such a problem, we use keyboards with a mixed layout.
