One square = 1. Sum of painted whole squares = 20. Take the left side not fully painted square, and immediately above it another one, it is a rectangle, it is divided in half by the painted part, so it = 1 square Since it consists of two squares, and is divided in half. It's the same with the right side. Now add 20+1+1=22. The answer is 22.
