The Guardian of the Boundary of the Blossom said to the Most High: "Ah, wise man! Allow me, wise man, to wish you a long life! - I refuse! - answered the High One. - I wish you, wise man, to be rich! - I refuse! - I wish you, a wise man, many sons! - I refuse! - Longevity, wealth, many sons is everyone's wish. Why are you the only one who does not long for them? - The Guardian asked. - 'Many sons are many worries,' replied the Highest. - Wealth is much trouble, and old age is a disgrace. No virtue can grow from these three things, so I refuse. - At first I took you for a wise man," said the Guardian, "and now I see you are a noble man. Nature has produced a darkness of men, they must be given employment. If you have many sons and give each one an occupation, where will the worries come from? If you have wealth, let people share it, what trouble will there be? For a wise man lives like a quail, eats like a nestling, moves like a bird, leaving no trace. When there is no way in the Celestial Empire, the wise man strengthens his virtue in idleness. If in a thousand years he gets tired of living, he flies away to the immortals, saddled with a white cloud. There, in the abode of the ancestors, there is no access to the three troubles. But if no harm comes to the body, where will the disgrace come from? And the Sentinel went away. - May I ask you something? - The High One began to follow him. - Go away! - The Guardian answered him.
