Dear Vlad, I heard from my friend, a historian, a professor who taught at Moscow State University (unfortunately, he died recently of a stroke), a wonderful and interesting man who was, I heard an amazing but very similar to the truth version of the origin of this word. On the Great Volok on the way from the Varangians to the Greeks, through which ships were dragged from the northern river system to the south and back in the center of Russia, lived people, who were called so - Volochane, see the geographic name of a fairly large townVyshny Volochok and several similar small. For the ferrying of a vessel through their territory Velikiy Volok, the Volochans or people of the Volok Shorok Volochi lived there, took a duty at the outposts along the Volok and kept a strong guard for that purpose. Of course, merchants did not like it and they accordingly spread throughout Russia the news that the people of Voloki living on Volok are not nice and swore at them with the last words. So the swear word "bastard" settled and spread throughout Russia, and even the singular form "bastard" was invented. Here is such an interesting, and quite plausible, historical version of the origin of this unusual word. Good day to you. Prof. Glazunov V?

I read that it was the name of a footman who took off the lord's boots and maybe something else. Then my guesses imho, right:-D: then it probably became, swearing, saying, who am I and who are you - a servant, a footman, a bastard. Or: you're only fit to be a bastard.

I had a kid in high school who used to say "bastard", his favorite person. I know it's wrong, but it's funny.
