There is no confidential information in the passport, your folks are paranoid.

and you don't know them either, why should you work there without a contract? Won't accept you officially, is it even worth working at that shag?

It makes sense to give a copy not ~photographic quality, but just as a text containing ~all passport data, and without a photo. And show your passport to verify the copy against the original without giving it to you to be able to copy it.
