CHINESE TRADITIONAL THEATRE The Chinese character for Xi - theater, spectacle, play - has two parts. The left one, the element xiu, means "Emptiness. Emptiness is a fundamental category of Chinese culture. It is not an absolute nothingness, but the center of enormous inner energy, the deepest beginning of everything on earth. The right part of the character, ge, means "battle axe" The theater is an actor's manipulation with an axe in the void... As always in history, the origins of Chinese theater originate in religious rituals and palace festivals. And that was as much as 4,000 years ago. Even back then, a distinction was made between singing and dancing actors - chanyu - and jesters, performers and comedians - paiyu. In 206 B.C. the chess game became very popular. The spectators watched with bated breath the sword swallowers, the tightrope walkers, the strongman contests, the dances and the colorful games of the dragons. This is where the Chinese hieroglyph "SI" - Theater - came from, as did the canons of Chinese artistry: singing, speech, dancing, movement and martial arts. In the sixteenth century, a special kind of theater art was formed in southern China - the kunqu drama. And by the end of the seventeenth century kunqu had won the capital's public and the emperor's court and gradually lost its mass audience, becoming an aristocratic form of art.
