Nerekhta town owes its existence to salt springs. Already in 1214. Nerekhta was a significant city, for which Princes Constantine and Yaroslav fought. The extraction of brine for boiling salt was at that time a very labor-intensive process. The derricks were equipped with a complex system of ropes with counterweights and a massive beam. It took many people to operate such a system. In the 17th century, work on the salt pits was suspended due to the weakening of salt brines and the emergence of cheap salt from the lower reaches of the Volga. Trade in linen canvases began to develop - long since then linen growing and home weaving had been developed here. At the same time in Nerekhta appear first stone buildings, but regular construction refers to the XVIII - XIX centuries.
