Chatsky said, "I would like to serve, but I am sick of serving." According to Chatsky, the ideal of free life is freedom from the chains of slavery with which society is shackled, and then freedom. To study science with a hungry mind or to indulge freely in high and fine creative arts - freedom to serve or not to serve, to live in the countryside or travel without being called for that either a robber or a firebrand - and to be happy to take further such steps to freedom - from unfreedom:

Chatsky:To serve the cause and not the persons.To serve would be glad - to serve is nauseating! Houses are new but prejudices are old. Rejoice, nor years, nor fashions, nor fires, nor ranks are given by men, but men may be deceived. When in business, I hide from amusement, when in folly, I fool myself, and to mix these two trades, there are many skilled craftsmen, I am not one of them.
