A mail worm is primarily a network worm. This category includes programs that spread their copies over local and/or wide area networks in order to: infiltrate remote computers; run their copy on a remote computer; and further spread to other computers on the network. To spread, network worms use a variety of computer and mobile networks: email, instant messaging systems, P2P and IRC file exchange networks, LANs, mobile-to-mobile phone and PDA networks, etc. Most of known worms are spread in the form of files: attachment to an e-mail, link to an infected file on some web or FTP resource in ICQ and IRC messages, file in a P2P exchange directory, etc. Some worms called "fileless" or "packet" worms spread in the form of network packets and penetrate directly into the computer memory and activate their code. To infiltrate remote computers and launch their copies, worms use various methods: social engineering such as a text in an email urging to open an attached file, flaws in the network configuration such as copying to a disk opened for full access, bugs in the security services of operating systems and applications. Some worms also have properties of other types of malware. For instance, some worms contain Trojan functions or can infect files running on the local drive, i.e. they have the features of a Trojan and/or a computer virus.
