Yellow Angel A. Vertinsky In Parisian restaurants, In evening barns, In a cheap electric paradise. All night long I break my hands From rage and anguish. I sing something to the people. The jazz bands are ringing, the monkeys are dancing, And mangled mouths are bobbing. And I am crooked and drunk - Calling them to the oceans, And pouring flowers in their champagne. And when morning comes I wander the sleepy boulevard Where even children flee from me in fright. I am a tired old clown, I wave a cardboard sword, And in the light of my crown the light of day dies. The jazz bands are jingling, the monkeys are cheering, And they're frantically greeting Christmas. And I'm crooked and drunk, Asleep at the piano, To this wild hum and triumph. And then from the extinguished tree A yellow angel quietly jumped down. And said, "Poor Maestro, you're tired, you're sick! They say you sing the tango at night in brothels. Even in our good heaven, everyone was surprised. I covered my face with my hands, I listened to the cruel speech, Wiping away my tears with my tails, Tears of pain and shame. And high in the blue sky God's candles Burned out And a sad yellow Angel Quietly melted away without a trace.
