Eccentricity of a conic section, a number equal to the ratio of the distance from a point of the conic section to its focus to the distance from that point to the directrix. E. characterizes the shape of a conic section. Thus, two conic sections having the same E are similar. The ellipse has an E less than unity, the hyperbola is greater than unity, and the parabola is equal to one.
