Not all plaque can be removed by normal brushing. Some of the germs remain at the base of the teeth and between them: they cause swollen, red and bleeding gums. To prevent gingivitis{inflammation of the gums}, dentists recommend flossing. Coil about 50 centimeters of floss. Gently move it along your gumline, but do not traumatize it. Then make up and down motions. Use a new section of floss for each tooth. For the first 5-6 days your gums may bleed and then as the germs disappear the procedure will not be as painful. We can keep our smile fresh by flossing.
