Don't fuck around. Clean the groove around the perimeter of the window - where you'll later insert the window panel, and make the linings out of plastic!

To avoid thinking you can make a notch. all the paint is not necessary to remove. primer and plaster there is a dry mixture TG-40 even polished with a smoother. You can't knock it off with an axe.
