It was just peasant kids from neighboring villages who were guarding the herd. In the hot summertime, horses are driven out in our country at night to feed in the fields: flies and gadflies would not give them any rest during the day. It is a great holiday for the peasant's boys to drive the herd out before evening and to bring them in at dawn.
