The only other thing I could find Talk Russian! - September 10 and 11, 2003: To begin with, Dahl's Dictionary. Borsch, interprets Dahl, is sauerkraut beets; a genus of soup, a stew of beet kvasha, on beef and pork, or with pork fat. Well, it is very, very similar to our modern borscht. Here, in the dictionary entry borsch, we also find the word borchit - to pour too much, too much, too much. Accurate Dahl also points out that the word borch' is more used with prefixes on kabrut, i.e. to overdo. So the riddle is solved? Let's take a look at the Historical-Etymological Dictionary of Chernykh. So, no more beet sauerkraut here. Borsch is cabbage soup with beets, which is, of course, closer to us. There are similar words in Bulgarian, Czech and Polish. The author of the dictionary believes that the word borshch in Russian is known from the 16th century - it is found in Domostroy. Only then it was the name of the herb borshchevik. But the meaning of soup with beets apparently appeared in the 18th century. As for the verb to overdo - to overdo... And here - attention: the Historical-Etymological Dictionary literally plunges a knife into our dream. It calls this word - and I quote: a late, clumsy new formation, known only from the beginning of the 20th century. And it comes, according to the author of the dictionary, not from the word borsch, but from the word overkill. That is not to overpick, but to overpick - compare with the words to overpick, overpicky - fastidious, fastidious... Here is such a hypothesis. However, this does not very much agree with Dahl, who - remember? - mentioned the word borch, and with the prefix pere.
